Three Big Adelaide Events for Late 2026: The Royal Show, the Supercars and the Cricket

Adelaide Events Guide

Three Big Adelaide Events for Late 2026: The Royal Show, the Supercars and the Cricket

From the smell of fairy floss at Wayville to the roar of V8s on the parklands and a Test summer at the Oval, here is how to plan around Adelaide's busiest stretch of the year.

Adelaide saves some of its best for the back end of the year. As the weather warms and the city shakes off winter, the calendar fills with the kind of events that bring the whole state into town - a much-loved agricultural show in early spring, a thundering motorsport finale in late November, and the slow, sun-soaked rhythm of Test cricket in December. If you are coming for any of them, a little planning goes a long way.

These three events sit at different ends of the city but share one thing: they are all far easier when you are based in the centre. From the CBD you can tram south to the Showground, walk to the edge of the parklands circuit, or stroll across the footbridge to Adelaide Oval. That is the quiet advantage of a central base, and it is the reason we put together this local rundown of what is on, when, and how to do each one well.

We run self contained apartments across three central Adelaide locations, so the practical tips here come from watching guests do these events year after year. For the full city calendar beyond these three, our local events in Adelaide page is worth a look as you plan.

No. 01The Royal Adelaide Show

The Royal Adelaide Show is the state's biggest annual event, and for many South Australians it is a fixture of the calendar rather than a day out. Held at the Adelaide Showground in Wayville, just south of the CBD, the 2026 Show runs from 5 to 13 September across nine days. Expect prize livestock and show jumping, the Yard of Ale and woodchop, fireworks most evenings, carnival rides, free entertainment, and the showbag pavilion that draws a crowd of its own.

It is unashamedly a family event, and it rewards a plan. Arrive earlier in the day with younger children to see the animal nursery and the rides before the queues build, and time your visit so you are still there for the evening fireworks. Wear comfortable shoes, bring a refillable water bottle, and set a showbag budget before you walk in - the pavilion is a lot to take in.

Best for Families, first-time visitors and anyone who wants a full, easy day out with kids.

Getting there is simple without a car. The Glenelg tram runs south from the city to stops within walking distance of the Showground, and Adelaide Metro adds extra services across the Show period. From a CBD base you are ten to fifteen minutes away, which means you can head back to drop off tired children or stash the showbags and return for the evening. Our Adelaide Metro guide covers tram ticketing and timetables should you need it.

Local tip

Weekdays are noticeably calmer than the two weekends, and a half-day twilight visit can be the sweet spot - cooler, quieter, and you still catch the fireworks. If you are coming with a big extended family, splitting into two visits over a longer stay beats trying to see everything in one go.

No. 02The bp Adelaide Grand Final

Motorsport returned to Adelaide's streets to enormous crowds, and the event now closes the national season as the bp Adelaide Grand Final. The 2026 running is on from 26 to 29 November on the parklands street circuit on the eastern edge of the city. As the championship decider, it carries an extra edge - titles are settled here - and the four days pair the on-track racing with a strong line-up of evening concerts and off-track entertainment.

The circuit's great trick is how close it sits to the city. From the East End you can walk to the gates, which makes a central apartment close to ideal: you avoid event traffic and parking entirely, and you are minutes from the bars and restaurants of Rundle Street and Gouger Street once the engines stop. Pack ear protection if you are trackside for long sessions, plan around the day's schedule so you catch the headline races, and check what you can bring through the gates before you go.

Best for Motorsport fans, groups of friends and anyone who likes a festival atmosphere with their racing.

This is one of the events that books out central accommodation fastest, so it pays to lock in a base early. Should you be travelling with a group of fellow fans, several apartments in the one building keeps everyone together and close to the action - our group accommodation is built for exactly that. For more on staying near the track, our dedicated race weekend accommodation page goes into detail.

Three events, three corners of the city - and one central base that puts every one of them within a walk or a short tram ride.

No. 03Australia v New Zealand at Adelaide Oval

December means Test cricket, and few grounds wear the format as well as Adelaide Oval. The 2026 summer brings Australia against New Zealand, with the Adelaide Test scheduled for 17 to 21 December. It is set down as a daytime Test rather than a day-night fixture this time, so plan for full days in the sun rather than evening sessions under lights.

Part of the appeal is the ground itself. Adelaide Oval is widely held to be one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world, framed by the heritage scoreboard, the hill and St Peter's Cathedral. A day at the cricket here is relaxed by nature - bring a hat and sunscreen, pace yourself across the session breaks, and leave time to walk the perimeter. The Test rarely runs the full five days, so check the state of play before committing to a day four or five ticket.

Best for Cricket lovers, relaxed group days out and visitors who want a classic Adelaide summer experience.

Best of all, you can walk there. From the CBD it is roughly a fifteen-minute stroll north across the River Torrens footbridge, no traffic and no parking required. That walk back into the city for dinner afterwards is one of the small pleasures of an Adelaide Test. If you are bringing a club, a supporters' group or the family, our Adelaide Oval events page has more on staying close to the ground.

Three central locations

Base yourself in the middle of it all and walk, tram or stroll to every event.

RNR has self-contained apartments across three central Adelaide locations, each within easy reach of the Showground, the parklands circuit and Adelaide Oval. Separate bedrooms, full kitchens and laundry facilities make event trips far more comfortable than a hotel room.

No. 04Plan your event run at a glance

If you are mapping out the second half of the year, here is the quick version - dates, venue and the easiest way in from the city centre.

Event Dates (2026) Venue & getting there
Royal Adelaide Show 5 - 13 September Adelaide Showground, Wayville. Glenelg tram south or special event services, around 10 to 15 minutes from the CBD.
bp Adelaide Grand Final 26 - 29 November Parklands street circuit, eastern city edge. Walkable from the East End; buses and trams nearby.
Australia v New Zealand Test 17 - 21 December Adelaide Oval. A 15-minute walk north across the River Torrens footbridge.
Book early

Event weekends fill central beds fast, especially the Supercars finale and the cricket. Once dates and programs are confirmed the best CBD apartments go quickly, so it is worth securing your base well ahead rather than leaving it to the month before.

No. 05Why a CBD apartment changes the trip

Event trips are where a self-contained apartment really earns its keep. A long day at the Show or the cricket is far easier when you can come back to separate bedrooms and a proper living space rather than everyone sharing one hotel room. The kitchen means breakfast before an early start and a quiet meal in when you would rather not queue for a restaurant, and the laundry matters once you are a few days in.

Location does the rest. From a central base the Showground is a short tram ride, the parklands circuit is a walk, and Adelaide Oval is fifteen minutes on foot - so you can skip event traffic and parking entirely and still be close to the city's restaurants and bars. Our Adelaide dining guide is handy for planning where to eat between sessions.

Travelling with a club, a supporters' group or the extended family makes the case even stronger. Our group accommodation can coordinate several apartments in the one central building, keeping everyone together and close to the venues. And should you be in town for a longer stretch around the summer events, our long-term stays give you the space and facilities to settle in properly.

Plan your event stay

Lock in your central Adelaide base before these events sell the city out.

Check availability across our three CBD locations and find the apartment that suits your event - a one-bedroom for a solo trip, more space for the family, or a cluster for the whole group. Book early to secure the dates that matter.

Frequently asked questions

When are the Royal Adelaide Show, the Supercars and the cricket on in 2026?

The Royal Adelaide Show runs from 5 to 13 September 2026 at the Adelaide Showground in Wayville. The bp Adelaide Grand Final, the Supercars season finale, is on from 26 to 29 November 2026 on the parklands street circuit. The Australia v New Zealand Test is scheduled for 17 to 21 December 2026 at Adelaide Oval. All three are within easy reach of the Adelaide CBD.

Where should you stay for these Adelaide events?

A central CBD base works for all three. The Showground is a short tram ride south, the street circuit sits on the edge of the East End parklands and Adelaide Oval is a walk across the River Torrens footbridge. Staying in a self-contained CBD apartment means you can walk or take a short tram to each venue rather than drive and park.

How do you get to each venue without driving?

For the Royal Show, take the Glenelg tram south to the Showground stops or use the special event services. For the Supercars, the circuit is walkable from the East End and well served by buses and trams. For the cricket, walk from the CBD across the Adelaide Oval footbridge in about fifteen minutes. Adelaide Metro runs extra services for major events.

Do these events book out accommodation early?

Yes. Event weekends, particularly the Supercars finale and the cricket, fill central beds quickly once dates and programs are confirmed. Booking early secures the best CBD apartments and the layouts that suit families and groups. Should you be travelling with a team or larger party, lock in group accommodation well ahead.

Are these events suitable for families?

The Royal Adelaide Show is one of the most family-friendly events on the calendar, with animals, rides, showbags and free entertainment. The cricket suits families across a relaxed day in the stands, and the Supercars offers off-track entertainment and concerts alongside the racing. A self-contained apartment with separate bedrooms and a kitchen makes the longer days easier with children.
